I had a very unique instrument come into the shop yesterday. It’s an American built Weissonborn/lap guitar (*spelling). The top has separated from the kerfing and sides on the lower left bout, and was raised significantly while under string tension when the customer dropped it off. I have a two fold problem as I see it. Applying horizonal…

How would you approach a neck reset where the heel has already cracked?
I have a red-label Yamaha FG-180 that’s in overall nice condition, but the neck angle is poor and the heel is already cracked. I’d like to attempt a neck reset, but I’m unsure how to proceed given the existing crack. Should I approach the reset as usual, or plan an alternate method because of the damage?
Has anyone here tackled a reset on a…

Broken Scroll on Mandolin Head
The previously glued scroll on a mandolin headstock has broken off again.
I’ve seen Frank Ford’s fix, where he routs and glues in a spline, but I am wondering if there is a simpler fix for a less expensive instrument.
Thanks.

Hello,
(First post)
I’m a newer builder and I’m rebuilding an old destroyed archtop as a learning experience. I am using WEST System epoxy to glue in the new braces. I successfully got the first one in and the problem is with the second. It appears that the epoxy for the second brace did not set or cure. The leftover glue in the little cup is…

Hi Everyone,
I hope you’re having a great weekend!
Can anyone help diagnose my mystery B string buzz?
I tried to attach a video but the site won’t take it.
I’ve tightened all hardware and the b string is not hitting any frets.
I’m giving it a set-up and when I had to lower the nut slot height of the B string it improved a…

I had someone comment on my Instagram page that they are having trouble finding anyone to do a Martin binding repair for them. I told him I’d post something here. Please comment if you would do that and I’ll send your info to him.

First Bridge Re-Glue: Soundboard Tearout?
Hi all, I got a cheap Facebook marketplace guitar (“Olympia by Tacoma”) to try my hand at a bridge re-glue. The removal went okay, though I definitely learned a lot and will do better next time!
The finish wasn’t masked in the bridge area, which is to say the bridge was glued to the finish, not the wood. I don’t know if that made it more prone…

Would I be right in guessing this guard is an aftermarket job? It seems to have a stiff clear acrylic underlay (for want of a better word) – the guard itself is very flimsy and just doesn’t look right? I don’t have a lot of experience with this so would appreciate those with more commenting…
cheers,
Steve.
