Steam Box Idea... What's wrong with this idea?
Speaking of Trevor Gore… I’ve started using falcate bracing on my ukuleles and in making the braces, 3 strips of .0625″ spruce are bent and then put in a bent lamination glue up rig using epoxy.
Bending spruce is no fun on a hot pipe. It’s slow, fussy, the fibers want to delaminate. I have been thinking about building a small dedicated…

Trevor Gore on tucking top braces into linings
I’m reading the Design book of the Gilet/Gore set (2nd Edition) and ran across something that surprised me. Under “Top bracing layout – guidelines” (Section 4.4.8, pp 4-52) Gore writes, “Brace ends that are housed into the linings stiffen the edge of the soundbard considerably and so constrain its mobility. Unless you are chasing a…

Hey everyone, I had a question on guitar building and overcoming something of a mental hurdle that I have. Quite awhile back I had access to a CNC machine and routed some Stratocaster bodies which you can see in the pictures. I was mostly pleased with how these turned out, but there are a couple of issues. On the cherry bodied guitar, the seam…

I’ve used thin plywood slats forever in my go bar deck, but I think I’m ready to try fiberglass bars. What’s the consensus on a good source for these? Also for some reason, I seem to remember seeing someone using fiberglass slats. Maybe they were manufactured for sail stays? As in on a sailboat. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Chris Schryer started the discussion Interlocking Scarf Joint in the forum Design and Testing 2 months ago
A while back I saw a Canna Guitars video on Instagram and thought his use of the “wave” scarf joint between his neck and headstock was an interesting use of CNC. But it got me thinking about other options, and this idea percolated in my brain:
Cut a regular scarf joint, but then using a CNC cut a tenon into the neck, and a mortise/dado into the…

Missing soundhole braces Gretsch 6021 Town&Country Rancher flattop acoustic
Technically this is a repair, but I thought there would be some crossover with building, so I posted here as well. A 1950s Gretsch Town & Country Rancher 6021 is missing the two braces on either side of the sound hole (see photo). Because this is such a wide instrument (17” lower bout), I’m thinking that installing those missing braces will…

Fender Double-tap humbucker problem
Hello all,
A customer dropped a recent American Professional II Strat to have a Double-tap humbucker installed at the bridge. I rewired the guitar following Fender’s schematic (see below) and installed a stacked 250 and 500k volume pot, treble bleed PCBs and push-push coil split/tap for this pickup. All went very well, until I tried it at…

Guitar frequency testing in the white.
In Michael Baskin’s on-line video, he uses a frequency test of a guitar in the white to determine whether to thin the lower bout before finishing. The guitar in the video has a bridge attached. I’m wondering if this is the final bridge or something temporary. If the latter, how do the results compare to the final frequency analysis? I’ve used…

Testing Mandolin Top Wood Billets
For my current mandolin build, I set out to answer 2 questions:
1. Whether to use physical deflection or frequency analysis to measure stiffness, and
2. How well can I measure wood quality in rough sawn form? (T. Gore says it needs to be planed smooth and rectangular for frequency analysis.)
I have 4 different topwood species available for…

Side bending - actual problem or isolated freak out?
Hello All!
My first post and I’m very happy to be here and share the highs and lows of this pony ride.
After years of bending sides on a hot pipe or bending machines belonging to ‘other people’, I finally built myself a bending machine. Functionally it is great, but the result on some test material was far from great. See pictures attached. What…
