Guitar frequency testing in the white.
In Michael Baskin’s on-line video, he uses a frequency test of a guitar in the white to determine whether to thin the lower bout before finishing. The guitar in the video has a bridge attached. I’m wondering if this is the final bridge or something temporary. If the latter, how do the results compare to the final frequency analysis? I’ve used…

Testing Mandolin Top Wood Billets
For my current mandolin build, I set out to answer 2 questions:
1. Whether to use physical deflection or frequency analysis to measure stiffness, and
2. How well can I measure wood quality in rough sawn form? (T. Gore says it needs to be planed smooth and rectangular for frequency analysis.)
I have 4 different topwood species available for…

Comparing abrasives for dry-sanding finishes
I love the option of levelling a finish with dry paper as it’s so much easier to see your progress, though I’m not convinced dry paper has much advantage over wet sanding with good silicon carbide paper after levelling.
The dry-sanding options I’m aware of include Eagle’s Assilex/Buflex, Klingspor’s GreenTec, 3M’s Flexible Polishing…

Brand new Gibson Hummingbird with Wolf tones
A customer brought me a new Hummingbird with fret buzz a few weeks ago. After performing what may be the best levelling job I’ve ever done, the buzz was reduced, but still noticeable, though it sounded different than normal fret buzz. When I noticed that the sound was worst when playing F2 (on the A string or D string), I did a…

How to glue wood pick guard on shellac finish
I’m finishing up a dreadnought with a wood pickguard (ebonized mesquite) that I need to glue to a French polish finish. Wondering what glue to use and whether I need to scrape off the shellac or just glue it to the finish.
Thoughts??

Les Paul Cherry neck: Touch-up or refinish?
Thanks Al,
I use the FNF liquids, but not powdered stain. I’d welcome a 1-on-1 if you’re game. Whatsapp works well (+1-253-376-0116). I’m on Pacific time.
Looking forward to talking!

Les Paul Cherry neck: Touch-up or refinish?
The neck on this Epiphone Les Paul was repaired by the local Guitar Center, but they left it ragged and the customer asked me to fix the finish. It appears to be very thick poly (not lacquer) and the crack has some glue left over from the repair. I would love to be able to just fill and finish the cracks, but I’m afraid it will be…

Nice plots. Have you discovered the overlay feature in REW? It’s a fantastic feature for comparisons like this.

Deflection vs. Frequency for measuring flexural modulus
I’m not trying to push any one method, just trying to understand the options. The T. Gore books talk about both, so it seems reasonable that they should produce similar results. I’m curious to know if others have produced results similar to mine, or if perhaps I’m doing something wrong…
I will differ with you on the issue of brace…

Deflection vs. Frequency for measuring flexural modulus
I didn’t repeat the test. When you say you find deflection is less “reliable” what standard are you using? Do you mean less “repeatable” or is there another standard against which to measure them? These same tops were tested by Pacific Rim Tonewoods, and I found a similar (weak) correlation between theirs and my deflection-based E,…
