Neck Jig shop stand question

    Hey Everyone!

Does anyone have experience with using the neck jig/shop stand setup without bolting the stand to the floor? Eventually I will bolt it down but want to try a few different spots to commit (still working on shop layout). I just had epoxy floors put down and do not want to drill extra holes in the floor! Thanks!

Are you asking about the Total Vise workstation?

My Total Vise is bolted to my bench in my main work space, where it’s been for almost two years. And, I can’t wait to move it away from my bench to its own telescoping stand bolted to the floor away from the bench. I’m just perpetually short on funds, or I’d have done it ages ago.

It works fairly well bolted to the bench. Problem is I’ve lost 1/3 of my bench to a tool I don’t use every day. If it were away from the bench, I’d probably use it even more than I do.

You’ve inspired me, damn it. Gotta gather up the funds and move the TV to its forever home, somewhere off of my workbench!~~~

Hey!!! I actually have the stew mac neck jig which comes with a vice and shop stand. I bought it a year ago and finally have my workshop ready so am going to set it up this weekend. The total vise stuff looks awesome! Maybe one day if I save up I will get the proper work station!

Hi Corey! I bolted my shop stand to a cement paver with 2 pieces of 3/4″ plywood (so I could countersink the bolt heads) and glued a floor mat under it. I can drag it around without scratching the floor, but it is stable enough to handle almost anything.

I like that! How much does the base weigh?

Hmmm. a 16″x16″x2″ paver from Home Depot ~25# maybe? Two 16″x16″ pieces of 3/4 plywood a couple of lbs. 30 lbs-ish?

You inspired me to finish my Frankenstein pedestal.

I’m excited to see how this will improve my workflow. This weighs in at around 55 pounds, and thus far seems pretty stable. I’ll likely bolt it to the floor eventually, but for now I have the option to try it in a couple different places.

          Cheers!

I had the same concerns. I built my own stand with scrap steel and a welder. The base is 1/4 steel and it wobbled too much. So I added 1inch plywood to the bottom of it and it works very well…
