Working for Free- When and Why?

The local presentation I just did was free. I initially asked for a fee then decided I wanted to do it at no cost because the director of the place that hosted it has always been a big supporter of my shop and the venue is new and very important (lessons, workshops, rehearsal space, recording studio) in my area.
