wiring diagram
Posted by Mitch Rice on May 16, 2025 at 7:17 pm2 GFS Surf City pickups.
3 way toggle switch
2 volume, 1 tone
Can I wire this to make the volumes work separate for respective pickups and together in the middle position? Without a blender pot.

The way I am thinking it, your layout would be: master volume, neck (or bridge) volume, and master tone. Bridge pickup wired to the toggle, neck pickup to middle of neck volume pot, output to toggle. Toggle output to master volume and tone wired in normally.
It’s after midnight and I just got home from work, so drawing a diagram is not happening at this time. Maybe in the morning someone else will have come up with a better solution, or I can diagram it then. I’ll check back in.

After a bit of sleep, and some time to think it over more clearly, my idea only allows control of neck pickup blend volume when in the middle position. For example; master volume at full, neck volume at half, would result in bridge heavy mix. Turning down the master volume would reduce overall volume, but is still bridge heavy in the mix. It does not allow half volume bridge with full volume neck. I can still offer a diagram if that limitation is acceptable to you.

Hi Jon,
Not with a master. I’m looking to be able to dial in both pickups in the middle position using the volumes independently. Thank you. Any diagrams greatly appreciated.

Sorry, not able to help. Maybe Gibson style wiring.

I apologize for being kinda rude. Working second shift 6 to 7 days a week has made me a bit short tempered.
My lack of experience with Gibson wiring leaves me unable to think in their terms.
I look forward to seeing if anyone else with more experience comes up with a solution.

Hey Mitch
I’m not following this exactly. In the middle position, can you expand on what you want each volume pot to do?
Thanks

So, the question of what you want the volume pots to do in the middle position is open but, in the meantime, I’ll pass on this in the hope that it covers something.
This sounds like it should be just like an explorer with single coils. I’ve attached a drawing.
Pickup hot wires to volume pots.
From volume pots to switch.
Output from switch to master tone pot and then to output jack.As shown, it will operate like a Gibson, in the middle position, turning EITHER volume down will cut out BOTH pickups. If you prefer the volume pots to be independent and just to cut volume for the pickup they control, reverse the input and outputs at the volume pots (so the pickup hot connects to the middle lug)

Gerry, what I was looking for was for the volumes to work independently in the middle position. Thank you.

Ok. Wire as shown but connect the pickup hot wires to the middle lug of each volume pot. The wires going to the switch will then come from the other volume pot lug. That make sense?

Got Sketchy, Complete Wiring and subscribe to the ‘rants’. Thank you for being an incredible resource.

Uploading a revised diagram for this. The diagram above showed the standard Explorer wiring and I included some info on how to decouple the volume controls. I’ve made a new one that actually includes the decoupled wiring. So, you can go with this diagram if this thing is the sort of thing you want your thing to be. 😄
Two pickups, 3-way toggle, two volumes (decoupled) and master tone.
