Shellac repair
Hi everyone,
I’m kind of new to this and I don’t have a lot of experience in finish work so I just wanted to ask for some very basic advice on repairing shellac. I’m working on a violin for my neighbor (it was made by her grandfather in the 1970s) and I think the only structural work it needs done is a new soundpost, but also the finish has a LOT of checking and some parts where it’s uneven and looks kind of dirty, as well as a few places where the wood itself is chipped. I tested it with alcohol and it got sticky so I’m pretty sure it’s shellac, but I don’t know where to start when it comes to repairing it. I have never done French polishing before and I have a can of Royal Lac that I’ve been really wanting to try to use on something, but I don’t know if I can use it for this…has anyone here worked with Royal Lac before? And as far as actually starting the project goes, should I try sanding the finish first, or applying the solvent? Sorry for the basic questions, I’m really new to this.
Thanks! 🙂
