    Question for the group..

Let’s say you start with a new nut blank and leave it too tall, but cut the slots to the proper depth. So you are left with a scenario where the strings are fairly buried in the nut (not protruding from the top), would that affect playability or just potentially cause binding issues and look bad?

    Thanks,

    James

Most of the expensive guitar builders tend to favor roughly half of the string width outside of the slot. As a result, I’ve personally been conditioned to view excessive string depth as looking pretty rough. It also can be a binding hazard with some tuner configurations.

Said above perfectly – I also believe that when having high “walls” in the slot, the strings don’t ring out cleanly.

I agree with both Ian and Chris. 50% of the string in the slot is my target. If too deep, not only can you have binding/tuning issues, but getting a clean downslope to the headstock/tuner can be more difficult. If the string is pinched in the slot, that can affect intonation (the break point isn’t as precise), and increase absorption/admittance (rather than reflect that energy back into the string), thereby reducing string energy.
