I recently picked up a Sterling Atlas 12 string that is in excellent shape except for some bellying, which once I get into setting action, may determine if I need to add a ‘bridge doctor’ to remediate some of it.

However, I noticed that the saddle (adjustable but set to lowest point) has no curvature and there is not much down pressure on the center sets of strings which is causing some buzzing.

My question is this (my first 12 string practice so pardon the ignorance): Should the saddle reflect the same radius as the finger board? I just got my saddle blank stock in from Stewmac so I have some blanks to make a new one with.. I attached a pic of the saddle for review.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and experience..

Yes the saddle should match the radius of the fingerboard. A lot of these old 12’ers need the bridge doctor. Makes sense to me.

G’day Tom, I agree with David but would add that the Bridge Doctor is of most help where you notice some top deformation – not just bellying, but bellying accompanied by a dip in the top in front of the bridge…a little bellying is pretty normal, but having a dip is not…

    cheers,

    Steve.

Thanks again to those that lended their wisdom. Bridge doctor just came in plus some bone saddle blanks so will get ready to tackle that project in near future.
