I was in need of a set of ferrules for vintage Waverly 4-on-a-plate mandolin tuners with 0.21″ diameter posts, but no one wanted to part with a vintage set. Tom Wittrock, of Third Eye Guitars here in Springfield, MO (late 50’s Les Paul guru), suggested I check the local leather store and damn if he wasn’t right on! For less than $10 I got a bag of 50 ferrules that fit perfectly, seriously, these were a perfect fit. They come in chrome, nickel, and blued (brass). Here’s are some photos of them on the Waverly mandolin tuners and also on whatever machines came on my 1960’s Harmony H165. the Harmony didn’t come with them originally, but sure took the slop out of the wallered out post holes. Their outside diameter of the collar is 0.375″, or just a few thou proud of that, and the O.D. of the portion that fits in the post hole is right at 0.25″. The image of the Harmony headstock shows one on the G string that I buffed with 0000 steelwool to try and match the patina of the posts, but I shined up a bit too much. I’ll try again. Luckily, I’ve got plenty of spares to figure that out.
