Just got a Martin M38 in the shop with several issues:
1 – hole in the side from an ill-advised (!) home attempt to install a strap button

2 – bubbling of the neck finish over the entire length

For #1 I’m thinking I’ll use Ian’s scoopie technique after applying an inside patch.
For #2, the neck also has some good sized dings in it. I’m thinking of gently sanding off the old finish and bubbles, filling the dings, and then applying new finish to the entire neck

The hole is fairly straight forward. I’d back it with something on the inside, fill it and paint it. The one thing you probably dont want to do is fill it with Indian Rosewood cuz it will just get too dark. You could fill with mahogany and paint it to look like IR pretty easy.
The neck finish looks like it is having adhesion issues. If you get under a bubble and tug on it does it peel past the original defect ?

Hi Ian. If I get under one of the bubbles and lift it pulls up the finish around it. Is that what you are asking?

Yes. That is someone missing a step of prep in finish. They didn’t scuff sand after pore fill probably.

So would you recommend sanding the existing finish completely off?

Don’t know if this is relevant but the bubbles are only on the treble side of the neck. None on the bass side.
