Hoping to get some input on this touch up. Auxiliary pieces of rosewood were added to cover up the screw holes from a previous bridge many years ago. The footprint of those pieces was scored, in some cases deeply. There were spots where top material was missing. I grafted pieces from under the bridge footprint which (along the same grain lines ) I will replace prior to bridge glue up. The challenge here is the inability to blend beyond the repair area. You may notice a bright orange color around some of the margins , which was remnants of the original (unoxidized?) finish. I had a really good color match with pigments, which looked like garbage from other angles… So I settled on this repair which looks “similar” from all angles. I may end up sending it out like this, but how would y’all have approached this? What would you have done differently? What colors would you have gone heavier or lighter on? How would you have hid the screw holes?

Unless you have a strong plan for how you would improve it, i’d leave it. I think it looks good.

If this came into my shop i would tell the customer to leave it too.

Thanks Ian, I am going to send it out the door like this. I was just wondering if anybody had input on how it could have been done better or differently.

This is the type of situation that I always think I can improve but in the end I spend a lot of time on it without making it look much better, if at all. So yeah, as tempting as it is to fiddle with it, it really does look fine as you have it. Nice job!

Thanks Al, I could definitely sense that coming in this case.

There are a few things that might have helped.

    1. It’s a little dark in spots. If you’re going to miss, missing light is usually less eye catching
    2. the line around the repair is dark. This would have been good to do the Iris Carr trick of sealing the project and leveling before adding color.
