    Hey everyone!

My repair mentor was visiting my shop today and was talking about a customer of his who has a greven that needs a neck set. He has never reset one before and I was curious if anyone here has and knows any details about the neck joint. Thanks!!!!

Hi Corey, American Lutherie (GAL’s mag) ran a two-part article by John Greven called “How I Build 48 Guitars A Year With Almost No Tooling” a while ago. It’s been a long time since I read it but I recall it contained photos and descriptions of the whole build process and probably has some information on the neck joint and maybe photos too. It may be available on luth.org to members if you can’t find a physical copy.

I believe John may be retired now but if you haven’t already tried, you could also attempt to reach out directly.

Also, if I don’t tunnel vision on the question, and watch this video, this is a great tutorial on how useful a simple sander can be to guitar people. I mean the guy is shaping the neck on it. There are other videos of him shaping a bridge completely free form on the thing. He uses the sander for shaping his braces. It’s his go to…….

The belt sander is such a go to in my shop! When I worked at Santa Cruz I learned to shape custom carves as close as possible on the belt sander just like this. I shape so much on the sander, sometimes its worth super glueing your fingertips.

I wrote an article on installing a non-adjustable t-rod and neck reset for ASIA’s Guitarmaker at least a decade ago on a Greven and there’s plenty of pics. That build had no truss rod. Back issues are available online to current members. Maybe someone can provide it to you.

      good luck, pat

HAHA! Yes, gluing fingertips! When I started out a few months ago, I ground off my thumb pad. Took for ever to heal. I learned a neat trick. I take gaffers tape and wad it up and stick it to small things like nuts etc. Control from a distance and quick and easy.
