    Hey all!

Anyone know what lacquer pigment might better match the deep black colour of this tele body? It’s an American tele deluxe with a nitro finish.

Photos show: Finish damage was the size of a quarter. I’ve filled and levelled the area and sprayed on coat of Oxford black nitro. I poured a puddle of naphtha on to check the match and unfortunately no dice. I’ve used Oxford black many times for overspray during repairs and have always found it close enough. Unfortunately it’s way too grey for this job.

Wondering if anyone has encountered this before or has any recommendations. I’m set up to mix and spray my own lacquer if necessary.

    Thanks in advance!🙏

Often when I do pigment repairs like this, I usually end up going over the top of them with dye to both darken and feather the end. Try transtint/colortone black in an air brush. You might also try Fieblings Black Leather dye. That stuff is pretty darn black.

Also, if you are lucky enough to be in possession of the colortone pigments, that black pigment is also ultra black. Mixol, unfortunately is more of a deep charcoal.

Black colour tone was absolutely the one that matched. Applied it with an airbrush and then did my clear with cans. Thanks again Ian.

Thanks as always for your helpful reply Ian!

I’ve discovered an older can of Oxford black in my cabinet with a different colour code on it— and it’s darker! but still not perfect. I have found today that layering some amber and honey brown is bringing it much much closer to the original colour. I guess maybe fender’s clear coat had some other hues in it.

I do actually have the colour tone and mixol black! You’re right about mixol (quite grey). If I need to, the colour tone will be my next try. Thank you again!
