Okay gang I have a doozy of a crack repair. Young guy brought in a Epiphone LP Limited Ed. He had picked up the case while it was unlatched at the guitar took a nasty tumble. Severe finish damage, and the wood has a shear split in it as well. The undercoat is thick with a thin layer of nitro color on top. Spoke with a sweetwater rep and they said that the finish was nitro. Here’s the guitar specs via Zsounds:

I’ve enclosed some pictures of the damage. As you can see there’s A LOT of chipping of the finish. I was able to hold on to all of the missing pieces. The issue I’m seeing with this is first repairing the wood underneath without doing more damage to the finish when I clamp it together. I was debating using a syringe of gluboost ca (probably the normal to avoid any darkening of the wood), or possibly some g-flex. The second issue is that some of the damaged pieces of finish still there have delaminated from the body. Pressing them back down into place is a tricky endeavor. The customer wants as little artifact as possible, so I think rebuilding most of that finish with gluboost and a little airbrushed lacquer might be the move. The final issue is getting that flat satin like finish to blend.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yikes. In my experience, and from painful matching lessons, a full back and side refin (up to the neck joint and the bindings) has been the only way to address this damage in a way that I was happy with it leaving my shop.

Yeah, honestly I’m at an impasse as to how to go about it. The customer seems okay with doing a refin if it fixes the damage. It’s not out of the question I suppose, but I was really hoping for a less tedious avenue. Been doing a lot of refinishes lately though, so perhaps I can add this to the lineup.

Did you reach a solution yet KT? I have a similar issue with the same guitar, although my damage is midway down the neck.

I may start experimenting with ideas this weekend in my attempt to avoid refinishing the whole neck so keen to see/hear what you decided

      Thanks

At this point I’m thinking of doing a complete refinish of the back. Probably build up the finish with some Gluboost, level it and go from there. I might try to do some color matching with the gluboost powders to try and get it close then do a couple over coats of color or clear to blend and hide. @ianhatesguitars and @guitarspecialistinc y’all have any suggestions on this catastrophe?
