23 yo acoustic in for touch ups. EIRW, nitro. Has a couple of spots on the sides that look like this. In good general shape. What’s going on here? No texture, its under the finish.

    Looks like mineral deposits.

Or the pore filler reacted with the minerals

Figured. It is what it is unless its a full refin.

I found an inconspicuous spot and put a tiny dab of retarder on it. After that (nitro gone) picked it out with a dental pick. I think it’s filler of old. A touch of fill n finish again and it’s normal looking. It would need a refin as its in several places. Odd. Worst spot top upper bout. Back is completely free of it.

  • Seen that on most all old Taylors that have lacquer, even on the mahogany. As mentioned, it’s the old style pore filler. Most likely Behlen’s in the Walnut color. There was only a few colors available and obviously the browns and mahogany colors would drastically color the rosewood. The Walnut color was the closest thing to a clear paste filler that was available at the time.

Should they want a partial refin on the spots, any Taylor tricks for dealing with it?

There is some evidence on this instrument that is leading me to believe at some point someone put another coat of nitro on it a decade ago. Odd.
