    Hello looths worldwide !

I once heard on the Loothalong Grace talking (figuratively) about for a list of all the things thay may cause rattle in a guitar, and after fighting with a setup lately I’m in for starting this list, from the headstock down :

    – Old strings : replace the strings.
    – Loose tuners : tighten the ferrules, tighten the screws (on the buttons / on the axis).
    – Nut : create a funnel for the strings to ease the path to the tuners. Make sure that the string tree lower the strings enough, and the strings are wound low enough (enough turns) to insure proper angle at the nut. Make sure the nut is well seated (no rocking or gap below the nut). According to the issue, restring, grind the string tree, lower the string tree, replace the string tree for a lower one, relocate the string tree, replace the nut.
    – Loose trussrod / loose trussrod nut : tighten the trussrod nut until it encounters resistance.
    – Loose frets : set the frets with CA glue.
    – High frets : plane the frets.
    – Groved frets : plane the frets.
    – Loose pickup ring screws : tighten the screws.
    – Loose height adjustment screws : replace the springs / foams / tubbing for higher ones.
    – Low angle at the bridge : increase the angle by lifting the bridge or tightening the string retainer if applicable.
    – Loose bridge intonation screws : tighten the screws / replace the springs for longer ones.
    – Loose bridge acoustic saddle : replace the saddle.
    – Flat bridge acoustic saddle : round the saddle.
    – Loose saddle height adjustment screws : tighten the screws.
    – Loose tremolo springs : tighten the screws of the hook.

Please feel free to add your tricks and tips ! 🌞

Loose braces: tap back, probe bracing, reglue, etc.

Loose wires in acoustic: gather them up with wire ties so you can’t hear them when you shake the guitar.

I just about pulled my hair out chasing a light rattle in an ES-175 just to find an extra pickup spring stuck to the under side of the neck pickup.

Basically tighten any Loose nut/bolt/screw that is Loose (banjos are the worst for this)

Truss rod improperly installed and sympathetically vibrating inside the neck regardless of tightness: replace or figure out a way to get some caulk in there

This seems like the thread to share Frank Ford’s Interactive Buzz Diagnosis tool.

I got the wrong idea about this forum. I thought we’d be talking about experiences that rattled us during our repair escapades! Since I’m way at the back of the pack, pretty much everything rattles me! Since that’s not the case, I’ll save my train wrecks for my therapist. In the mean time, I’ll try to come up with something that fits the topic. I’m already enjoying these lists.
