Got this weird old japanese guitar in for some work, and it needs new tuners. The holes are spaced too far apart for a traditional kluson six-in-line spacing, and are ~9.3mm? However, the headstock is 0.660″, or just under 17mm, which is past what most tuners support. I might be able to squeeze gotoh ones on with a smaller washer under the nut? Or is there some other brand I’m overlooking that would be able to help solve my issue even better? (Without going to full hipshot prices!) Just one of those guitars that because everything is out by a 16th of a inch or less from standard something really routine has become a _lot_ more involved!

Thanks in advance for any advice or tips. 🙂

Would something like a set of Grover Stay Tights work ? Also, could you hit me with a picture? Might jar my memory.

These might work ? Could contact the seller with the specs maybe. The other thing I would think about, if nothing turns up and you have to punt, is to do open back, single plate tuners 6 in a line.

I have had this exact problem. You can’t use vintage tuners because the spacing is too wide, and you can’t use sta-tites because there’s no room for the screws. I opted for a modern tuner with an offset screw that worked. I can’t remember which. I didn’t love the solution because I had to drill out the holes and they didn’t look vintage anymore. You could also consider a pin lock tuner but not a staggered set since you need the full height. I don’t think mine had an overly thick headstock like yours, though.

Thanks y’all! This is what I’m dealing with, sorry for the belated reply. Definitely too close for the double screw sta-tite 3 a side, or klusons of that style. But also too far for the six in lines. I was gonna use the modern ones, but many can’t do 17mm of thickness. However I’ve found a set of nuts in the parts drawer that are longer than the stock gotoh ones which may be the combo to go with?

(Generic parts bin on the left, gotoh on the right. Same screw pitch so probably a-ok to mix and match? Owners more concerned with functionality over appearance.)
