This is a super sucky repair, I know. A customer brought this Goldtop LP in. He decided he wanted stainless steel posts. So he pulled out the post, then somehow broke a drill bit off inside the hole. The broken bit is still in there. Then he put the new stud in and broke it off too. He asked me to remove both the broken stud and the broken drill bit. 🤷‍♂️. This may impossible but any advice is appreciated.

  • The #420 Dremel cut off wheel. I would try to cut a slot in the top to accept your best flat head screwdriver. Then heat it up really good with a soldering iron and try to back it out. It might cut a little into the gold top, but at least it’s under the thumb wheel. And you didn’t make this mess to begin with…it’s a threaded post right? Not pressed in?

I think I might try a screw extractor. I’ve got one about the right size. That’ll probably get the post out, but I don’t know how to deal with the drill bit he says is below it. What a mess. Yes it’s a threaded post, not a pressed bushing. One option may be to convert it to pressed bushings.

There’s a drill bit under the post? Yikes! Anything is possible to repair, it just depends on how much time and money you want to put in to it. A screw extractor will most likely be able to get the snapped post out, but not the drill bit. The only real way to do that is to use like a coring bit to remove the drill bit along with the surrounding wood, then fill with a plug of like wood, drill a new hole in the plug to accept the bridge post. That metal flake finish is going to be pretty difficult to repair though, maybe just clear it? Let the adjustment wheel hide the patch? Anyone else have a suggestion?

Thanks. Yeah, the screw extractor didn’t work. I couldnt drill through the stainless post he installed, it’s so hard it kept chipping. I ordered exactly what you said. I have the stewmac one for the tuner screws, but it’s too small. Rockler has a 1/4″ one that is supposed work for a #8 screw, so that’s what I’m gonna try. Yeah the guy really buggered this one.

Yeah stainless is a real pain. That Rockler set should be perfect for the job.

Got it done! That was a huge drill bit under the post! Drilled out with a 1/4” screw extractor from Rockler
