I bought the O’brien vacuum clamp and a pump to clamp bridges on new builds, but also to use for repair work. I got tired of making custom top and bottom cauls for every odd-shaped bridge that comes in my shop. The vacuum clamp works great on a flat surface with no pick guard. I put it on a J45 with a pick guard, and it won’t seal. The gasket is too hard to form over the pick guard. I’ve seen YouTube videos of other folks using vacuum on re-glues with pick guards attached. I can’t tell what the gasket material is made of from those videos however.

Scott, Here is a pic of me using the clamp over a Taylor guitar that has a pickguard. I am able to get it to create a seal. The bigger issue for me is making sure to mask off the bridge pin holes and the piezo hole so that I can create a good seal.

Thanks for the reply Robbie. The guitar I was working on had an extra thick pickguard that was giving me problems. I ended up removing the pickguard because the customer fortunately decided to replace it. I agree, sealing up all the bridge pin holes and alignment holes can be a challenge to create a tight seal. I’ll try using the clamp again on a regular thickness pickguard. It sure was nice to not fiddle with cauls and c-clamps. The vacuum clamp did an excellent job in a fraction of the time.
