Before I hack into the Yamaha, I would like to get the opinion of the experts on a method of steaming the upper end of the guitar and ‘pressing’ the neck down to adjust the angle back to factory. There are several you-tubers that have tried and recommend it. My novice intuition is that even though it may work, wont the steaming of other areas of the body such as upper braces, etc, end up weakening the construction (glue stability) to the point it is less of a risk to remove the neck than to steam the snot out of the upper end? Curious mind wants to know.. :). Thanks in advance for sharing your wisdom/opinion.

I guess you’re referring to the method that Australian luthier John Miner called the 10 minute neck reset. I’ve never tried it, but I like his accent.

  • Yeah, I don’t like the idea of heating and/or steaming joints if you don’t plan on complete separation. We’ve all seen what happens to guitars that get left in hot trunks and attics, it doesn’t end well.

I’ve reset close to 10 or so Red Labels as others around here have as well. One guy has done about 80 that he recently posted about. It’s not as easy as a Martin but certainly can be done. I would use the foam cutters. The stacked heel has the grain running the wrong way (usually) and steam just makes it spongy and compresses causing problems.

Use four probes. Heat all the joints at once. Works well. Four Red Labels so far. No problem. Send photo’s of model? Dave Fengler probably has measurements for the joint location. You can locate him in the Looth Members search.

Thanks for all of the inputs. I am going to order the foam cutter package. I will try to post some pics of the FG200J. In the meantime, I just got done doing a neck reset of a crappy Fender that had a loose neck. It pulled straight out (not up) as the flanges on the neck’s dovetail were broken . I was able to slightly chisel down a few spots to slide the neck back in and added to threaded fasteners and turned it into a bolt on neck. I know, I cheated, but for a $40 guitar, some kid will have a playable instrument.
