1956 LPJR multiple neck breaks/repairs Help! 🙂
I acquired this old single cut JR around 6 years ago. Was aware of the previous breaks and repairs, wasn’t a particular concern as I acquired through trade.
The headstock broke a couple years ago with a very small sideways tumble ( in its case). I used some clamps and rubber tubing to glue the break back together.
Decided to scrape back the finish and see at the previous repairs. I see epoxy, carribbean walnut splines, carbon fiber 1/8 reinforcements, automotive epoxy puddy? And the front of the headstock has what appears to be oak veneer or something of the sort. *see pics
Also the serial # was taped off and cleared over in the past repairs, is it normal to see the serial in black numbers on a burst?TL;DR ; want to take my time and make a proper repair that might retain some value for the instrument.
Suggestions? Should I try to route out all the previous repairs, and inlay some mahogany? Should I try the carbon fiber weave trick? Should I make a new neck?
Thinking about sanding out the front veneer and making a proper cap to strengthen? What should I use a headstock cap?
Can anybody share logos for 56 JR? Should I silk screen, or buy some of those expensive UK decals? Thanks for the input.
