Splitting A Sound Hole Clamp In Half
I recently had a guitar come in with a crack in the top. The top was an arch top so the top was thick and the crack uneven from side to side so I wanted to be able to supply more pressure then just using magnets to be able to even up the crack sides. But access was limited to a small sound hole and so no way to get jacks or a clamp to fit.…

Problem fitting an LRBaggs Anthem to a Martin D-16RGT
So, like an idiot, I got well into the installation of an Anthem pickup system when I realized that the soundhole braces on this guitar are effing Lincoln Logs. They’re easily a quarter inch thick (and feel like basswood). Because the Anthem preamp is designed to straddle the soundhole brace, I can’t fit it as-is.
Anybody got any experience…

Thought I would introduce myself, I am a retired computer nerd ex farm boy that loves to fix things… used to repair/rebuild pianos but now that I live in FL, space is at a premium in small home so I now am venturing into repairing guitars…. I have numerous practice candidates I have picked up on the cheap as not to destroy anything of value or…

I ordered a guitar from Reverb, and when (RedNex) delivered it, it was obvious they had dropped it in transit. The seller filed a claim, and got reimbursed for the instrument, then told me I could just keep it.
Now for my question: how would you repair the sunken strap button and ugly gouge on the back of the guitar?

Finish repair from mystery solvents
A customer brought this Gibson songwriter deluxe in, it’s approximately 20 years old to his recollection. It needs a few things done including fret work and a bridge re glue.
At some point the guitar was lent out to a friend who dropped it then tried to fix the finish themselves. It looks like they used some kind of cleaner or something that…

Hello everyone,
I use a Stewmac japanese fretsaw (which produces .023″ wide fretslots, matching the width of the tang of stewmac wire) to recut my slots on refrets. The saw does a good job making the slots deeper, but struggles to make them wider and binds like crazy throughout the process. I think that is due to it not having enough (or any)…

Hello!
I have an Ovation CP-100 pickup. Its unsoldered and I can’t seem to get the pickup to work again.
There wasn’t a spacer either. Which doesn’t make sense because if the hot is soldered to the copper strip and the ground to the housing channel, it would just ground out.
Any experience getting these back together?…

1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling Frets
Looking for some guidance here – I have a 1973 Jazz Bass with maple fretboard and fretboard binding in for a re-fret. The finish is of course built up thick and crackly along the frets, and although they’re not seated too nicely, the first few came out really tough and chippy even after scoring the finish really well. I’m aware that Fenders… Read more

Anyone use vacuum clamping for bridge re-glues?
I bought the O’brien vacuum clamp and a pump to clamp bridges on new builds, but also to use for repair work. I got tired of making custom top and bottom cauls for every odd-shaped bridge that comes in my shop. The vacuum clamp works great on a flat surface with no pick guard. I put it on a J45 with a pick guard, and it won’t seal. The…

Comparing abrasives for dry-sanding finishes
I love the option of levelling a finish with dry paper as it’s so much easier to see your progress, though I’m not convinced dry paper has much advantage over wet sanding with good silicon carbide paper after levelling.
The dry-sanding options I’m aware of include Eagle’s Assilex/Buflex, Klingspor’s GreenTec, 3M’s Flexible Polishing…
