Elaine S Hartstein Hartstein Guitars started the discussion Easy to Make Pot Cleaning Cap in the forum Electric Repair 11 months ago
I was going to buy a pot cleaning cap from StewMac, but never got around to it. Well, today I needed to clean a bunch of scratchy old pots, so I made one from a piece of surgical tubing and a zip tie. I punched a hole with an awl for the straw nozzle, and held the rubber tubing tight to the bottom of the pot shaft. Almost no mess, and the…

What are you putting on your bench top?
I used the rubber waffle weave anti-slip mats until I noticed they left residue on bare wood and marked up lacquer. I used felt for a while but its splinter loving so nix that. Currently I’m using the SM pad with super cheap bath towels on top. The bath towels are cheap enough (buy them in sets on closeout) to rip into “grease rags” after…

Hey Karl good to hear from you.
I did some testing with the canopy and Titebond Melamine glue. I’ve used a different melamine glue (roo glue) in the past and liked it.
The melamine and canopy glues both popped off.
Tried both with 80 grit scoring on the binding and that helped a lot. The canopy still came off after i got a fingernail on a…

Fret pressing at heel transition
This is a cool whip, doesn’t look crazy to make. I think I reached out to the inventor for an interview at one point. Not sure what happened.

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
Those two tops look just like those split ones I got here, a Gibson Songwriter and a Martin GPC-something. One dark, the other very pale, with much larger splits though. I’ve reached out to the esteemed Mr. Di Burro to inquire about his technique involving full TJ cleats and tinted epoxy. Waiting for a reply but in no hurry as I’m not…

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
Nice idea. I already have a page about RH issues that gets republished at the top each year when the season comes. Getting an email sent to thousands of customers is another thing so you don’t get fragged as spam, though. This would required using the services of one of the specialized outfits to are known as legitimate bulk email senders. I…

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
It seems like there is talk of humidity going on, so I thought I’d throw in my two cents on that.
I have a 50s D18 in the basement that has no cracks and I guarantee has never been babied with humidity. My hypothesis with most cracks is that they have to do with manufacturers pushing wood cure, but that is beside the point really. There is…

Please share your processes for cracks that need splints
Hi Sean,
Agree 100%………However (does there always have to be a however?), I think it needs to start even before the customer receives, purchases etc. their instruments. And information needs to be tailored to specific areas (like the “known to cause cancer” warnings required in Cali). With the advent of the majority of instruments…
