Just joined the group and have only built 3 guitars so far but just ran into trouble on my latest project. Long story short: I built a ’57 LP Jr that came out fantastic but the neck was set incorrectly and was nearly unplayable. I cut off the body and made a new one and applied the burst and a few coats of clear before gluing in the salvaged neck. To finish up the neck joint with a bit more black, I dusted off my 20 yo Paasche airbrush, practiced a bit then went after that neck joint. As you can see from the photo, it came out horrible, and I have no idea why. Body was finished to this point with StewMac rattle can lacquer, and I used a 50:50 mixture of lacquer thinner to StewMac clear lacquer with about 20 drops of Mixol in 10ml total volume. Practicing on a re-sanded and vinyl sealed ply body blank I used for practicing painting the burst, it looked fine but not so much so on the new body. The body was wet sanded and wiped with naphtha before the airbrushing. I figured before making matters worse, I would see if one of the experts here might be able to offer some advice.

This would be good to use as a council of elders question. Would you be willing to submit this and a couple more pictures from different angles ?

I’m new here, so I’ll have to figure out what/where that is, but if that’s where it should be, then absolutely.

Also, it kind of looks like something is in the airline like water or oil. Have you drained your compressor lately ?

Good idea, and no, I haven’t, but I have a clear water trap inline and there’s nothing in it. Also, I shoot a little lacquer thinner through the gun before I paint, and of course, afterwards for cleaning. It does look line some sort of incompatibility or contaminant, though so I will look into this more.
