Listening in on the great zoom call today, a question was asked by the Stewmac representative, if the shop in the hot seat was an authorized repair center for any major brands.

How many of you shop owners are authorized repair centers for the major brands? Gibson, Fender, Martin, Taylor and so on….

Do you have any wisdom you can share or contacts to get signed up to do work for the major brands? Also do you find doing warranty repairs is something that is profitable for your shop…or is it something that is more of a pain in the ass than it’s worth?

I’m just thinking of ways to generate more revenue for my brick and mortar repair shop. Along with the credibility of posting major names on my website and shop walls.

The answer depends on your situation. If you need additional work then yes, it makes sense to do. I’ve never been an authorized service center because I don’t like to be locked into a pricing agreement but I’ve also never needed the additional work.

Does anyone know the steps or process to becoming an authorized repair center?

    • You just call the company’s and ask for a customer service rep. There are advantages and disadvantages. It can be a slippery slope regarding the pay scale as Al mentioned. One of the company’s has a huge binding falling off problem so I won’t work for them, I also know their pay scale. Another company has neck/fret work issues. I won’t mention names. The only plus side is that usually people have several brands, and they’ll bring you their other guitars that you can charge full price once they know you do good work and trust you. Message me if you have any questions.
