Card payment systems
Hi all,
Anyone have recommendations for card payment systems? At the moment, I only take cash or venmo, but would like to be able to accept credit/debit payments as well.

I use Square. Free app, you can tap pay from your smartphone. They take 3.75% at the point of sale. Working great for my shop in its small capacity.

Hi Chad. I use a payment system through my GoDaddy website. I can take payments in person with any cards or Apple and Google pay. I collect card and electronic payments with my cell phone, and can even tap-to-pay on my phone! You can send secure pay links to your customers via email or text and then it’s automatically deposited into your bank…

The Dreaded No-Show
Hi Folks,
This year, I’ve been reworking certain aspects of how my workshop runs, and I’ve come up against an unusual problem. I was curious to hear if others have had similar issues as well as what you decided to do about it. It’s really sort of a good problem to have, but a hurdle nonetheless!
Last year, I went back to operating the workshop…

Hey Kev,
I feel your pain. I have a busy repair business in downtown Toronto and sometimes get more work coming in than I can handle in within a reasonable time frame. I’ve only been operating for 5 years and seem to have a good reputation. Plus I’m in a busy city with lots of musicians and wealth. Seems like a good problem to have of course,…

Hey Kevin, Great post! My favorite topic! I’ve posted on my booking system so you can probably find that in a search but here is a summary, and I am happy to schedule a video or phone consult as well, to discuss and brainstorm. The system I developed for my shop has resulted in a drastic improvement in all aspects of the business and has helped…

David Ross David Ross Musical Instruments started the discussion Determining Cost of Parts… in the forum General Business 5 months ago
Hey everyone,
Recently I’ve been struggling to determine how much to charge the customer in regards to parts for a repair. The best example of this I can give would be guitar strings. Occasionally I’ll buy strings on sale, other times when they’re not on sale, and since cost of strings often varies, I may buy strings at the start of the year,…

What do I need to look for in getting proper insurance for my business? I’m a solo guitar tech working out of my house in Texas. Any insurance company recommendations? What kind of coverage do I need to be looking for?

Hello. I just graduated from my third Luthier school. I’m looking for guitar building or repair jobs. Any suggestions for places that are currently hiring? I have built 3 guitars from scratch so far in school and I have experience working at Santa Cruz Guitar Company building acoustics. Attached is my resume. Thanks.

Speaking opportunity next week. Your Thoughts?
I’m invited to talk next weekend at Andy Wood’s guitar camp. I’ve got 30 minutes to talk to a bunch of insanely talented professional guitar players, plus around 100 people that paid $3000 to be there for the weekend.
If you had 30 minutes to talk to a group like that…drop fire…add value about…

Hi everybody,
Can anyone share their workshop layout?
I have recently moved country and I need to transition from sharing a 300 sqm workshop to having my own, which will be significantly smaller.
I would find it very helpful if someone – especially luthiers operating in a small workshop – could share their workshop layout, even just by describing…
