Where does everyone buy their bone nut and saddle blanks? If anyone has contacts in Canada that would be ideal.

I know Doug Proper and Beau Hannam have recommended https://www.sfinternational.co.in/ . They are located in India and seem to push to sell larger quantities (50-100 and up). I suspect they are one of the supplier for Philadelphia Luthier Supplies, I have ordered from them before and I am happy with what I got (they sell in smaller quantities…

1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling Frets
Looking for some guidance here – I have a 1973 Jazz Bass with maple fretboard and fretboard binding in for a re-fret. The finish is of course built up thick and crackly along the frets, and although they’re not seated too nicely, the first few came out really tough and chippy even after scoring the finish really well. I’m aware that Fenders… Read more

Hi all, looking for some opinions and advice on the following. I have a 1973 maple neck Strat with original frets in for a re-fret. I’ve done my fair share of re-frets but for whatever reason never had the experience of a sideways-fretted maple-neck Fender with original frets (the ones I’ve had were previously re-fretted). My question is this:…

One other thing to consider beyond blowout cosmetics is how well the fret barbs are going to grab if you take them out sideways. In my estimation, sideways removal is probably going grab better.

Hi everyone,
I have a question regarding fret selection and quality control – have you ever experienced fretwire where the tang is not perpendicular to the bead? I am starting to fret a guitar using Sintoms fretwire which I have never used before, but chose because of its oversized tang (.025”, same as the slots) and bead were the dimensions I…

It is actually fairly common and challenging to remedy. .004 is a pretty big gap, but if you need the torque from that larger tang, you might just fill it. All of the Jescar fretwire I put in is never as down as I like, but by the end of the job, so much detritus from the fretwork as filled the gap, I never notice.

Ok thanks Ian! That’s both reassuring and frustrating at the same time, but at least now I know that it’s not just me!

Question regarding the TJ Thompson router base – can anyone tell me what extra equipment I would need to connect it? I assume it needs an air compressor, but does it simply connect to the compressor hose or does it require extra fittings and/or adaptors? Also, how does it compare to the Foredom tool? I’m looking into these mainly for fret…
