I’m similar to Luke in my preferences:
TAD Power tubes are my first choice for my custom builds and for repairs – great balance of quality and price. I’ve seen great reliability with these.
TAD Preamp tubes for custom builds if I don’t have old stock on hand.
JJ Preamp tubes for some custom builds, and many repairs if the client is more price-sensitive.
I run JJs in many of my personal shop amps, but I no longer buy/install JJ Power tubes for client amps. If they survive the first couple of hours, JJ sound great and perform very well. There have been a few power tubes that are unacceptably noisy, and a rare few that fail in those first few hours. Not worth my time testing and returning, or having performing clients take the risk in a live setting or on studio time.

I wish we could reverse-engineer the old Preservation Polish recipe for DIY or reissue – that has been my favorite so far.

I have several of the original versions and one of the later ‘final’ assemblies. The latest version lacks the same cushioned feel on the bearing surfaces.
Beyond the differences in dimensions and materials, I wonder if the type of grease used inside the handle has changed or if the tolerances have been adjusted.
Whichever version you have, they are still the best string winders I have ever used.

Thank you!
I’ve used Meguiar’s #9 Swirl Remover for years and love it for more assertive hand polishing, and will take a look at #7.
I see they have a #6 that must have just a little cut to it, and sits between #7 and #9.

Ian, do you use anything to thin it further?
Recommended brand of Liquid Carnuba wax?
