I have actually thought about carbon fiber in the sandwich. I don’t know if it would do much besides extra crack prevention. And you typically use epoxy when using carbon. And the gorilla glue is perfect for the structured sides.

It’s been so long since I put in kerfing or linings, i don’t remember it being that much of a pain. I don’t think it’s that much faster tho. Cutting the core takes a long time. Bending the sides. Doing a dry run. That all takes plenty of time. Last time I cut cores, I cut enough for 4 guitars, and I think it took well over an hour

I am also interested in the difference between laminated sides with solid linings. I think the solid linking will also add a nice impedance missmatch. But the sides will be lighter. The mass of the sides widens the active surface of the monopole. But you can achieve this in other ways.

Hey there! I love building with structured sides. Yes it’s a super clean look, looking through the sound hole. They are super fun to make. And they make a very strong mechanical impedance between the top and the sides. Which boosts the sustain and clarity a lot. Although you would Probly want to make some design changes if using them to make a strumming guitar. It could get muddy sounding. Also, it adds quite a bit of mass. So I typically use paulownia for the core. Although wrc would be nice too

Beau Hannam has a video around here showing his jig for headstock splines. They have a radiused bottom so there is less chance of going through the headstock or neck, while being plenty deep. And there is no endgrain gluing

Hey Nicholas. I don’t know much about the construction of this neck joint. I remember him talking about it in detail on the Luthier on Luthier podcast. It is similar to a Ken Parker joint but less Ken Parker. I have read quite a lot on a tilting neck joint. Is there a reason you prefer the sliding over a tilting?

I would listen to the podcast and check out some forums for information on this. If I find some time, I will do the same and report back.

I have never played a selmer either or any guitar of that style honestly. But you know what a player needs out of a guitar like that. Make a list of all the characteristics you would want out of a guitar to play that style music. And then figure out how to add them all!

That’s great your friend is buying it. You should def keep it close for measurements. Do as many experiments on it as possible. At the very least take a FRC of it so we can talke a Look too! Although that will lead to more questions from us and you having to do more testing.

I think William was getting at a good point. The calculation of top thickness can help you get similar sounding results with different pieces of tonewood (relating to sound results from a top or back, structured sides, bracing and such will all be different factors)

If you like the sound of the structured side floppy top then maybe that’s a direction to go in. You can change the vibrational stiffness value in the spreadsheet to get a result you are looking for and then continually hit that target.

However, there is an optimal balance for a piece of wood. Too thick and it has too much additional mass. Two thin and it loses stiffness.

The optimal balance for a selmer guitar is absolutely different than a fingerstyle guitar. You will want it to punch but have quick note decay. Which is Probly why the flop top is so appealing.

    Ok, I Got It!!!

First i moved the sketch 0.1mm up and out from the corner

Then i created a plane tangent to face and point. (secret ingredient)

Create a sketch in the plane.

Project 3d Geometry, Select top edge (where i went wrong…duh…)

Add small extention line of top edge. this will carry the sweep off the edge. (it was stopping just shy of the edge before)

Then sweep the sketch as normal, but selecting both lines to sweep along

    Adjust sweep lenth as needed

Thanks so much again @ianhatesguitars as well as @PaulMcEvoyGuitars for taking time to help me. and paul, i am going back to sketches and adding constraints to further define them. Thanks for the tip. Maybe you can contribute some thought out information and experiences on constraints in an article sometime.

Ian! That video is above and beyond the call of duty! Thanks. Trying to defend that line was exactly what I was trying to do Monday. And I was trying to figure out what means of making a new plane to use. I will see if i can get that guy working now. If not, I may need a zoom call.

Here is a link to the fusion file. Please let me know if it works. I am very interested in hearing multiple ideas and i would like to try applying them myself so that i can learn something new. <div>

Look at that! That’s a great option. That’s a huge variety and 50$ cheaper than what I have seen. Thanks man

Your thickness seems fine. You need a broader surface to bend on. If you can have a 3 or 4 inch surface with with a slight radius in one side it’s really nice. Because you can hold the wood flat on it. And then slowly push it off the edge into the shape you want.

I guess what I’m saying is. You need more surface area getting heated really hot and then the wood does what you want it to

Are you keeping the ding kings material on the patreon so it stays exclusive?

I’m excited to see it grow quickly with so many repair people starting to take measurements.

Doug seems very excited about taking measurements. I hope he inputs every guitar that comes across his bench!

That spreadsheet is from the book. it has good information about the materials for calculating a soundboard or back thickness. We could potentially have a spreadsheet like this pinned. This is always valuable data to builders. and a large database to reference would be very interesting.

But i was thinking a spreadsheet that displays funcionality of finished instruments. the monopole mobility measurements. bridge rotation, a spectrum embedded with the first modes of vibration. Any other data we can think of.

Then we can compare side by side the functionality of these instruments. See how bad the factories are screwing us.

Of course we want to input the make and model and probly information like bracing style as well. We should come up with a list of information we would like to see in the spreadsheet.

Yes actually, Daniel is a rebound classical builder here in Germany. He is a close friend of my friend Alex Voss. I met him last year at a small guitar show

That’s right. Scrape some finish off the back and it will work fine. I have installed a few. I used to live a short drive away from the owner, so I bought them direct. The owner is the nicest guy. If you ever have any questions with then, give him a call. He ALWAYS has a solution

  • Wow, integrated braces in a single piece aluminum top. That is intreguing. How does ot sound? Was the top domed? Have you ever done any guitar analysis on it? if not, check out Giuliano´s videos here on the group. I would love to see a spctrum from one of them

I think so. I believe Giuliano’s spreadsheets that are avilable through his book are google sheets. And we could make the settings and open editing format. So it’s always growing.
