Just finished my 7th acoustic guitar and have an issue that is perplexing me. Before putting strings on the guitar the bolt on neck fit very well. However after stringing up there is a tiny gap at the heel (please see pic). If I take off the strings (removing string tension) to floss the joint the gap isn’t there. Does anyone have tips to remedy the issue?

Nut overall height vs slot depth
Question for the group..
Let’s say you start with a new nut blank and leave it too tall, but cut the slots to the proper depth. So you are left with a scenario where the strings are fairly buried in the nut (not protruding from the top), would that affect playability or just potentially cause binding issues and look bad?
Thanks,
James

Cnc bed size?
For thise thst use a cnc, do you feel a 4×4’ would be much better than 4×2 for looth purposes? I habe a space where a 4×2 can fit now, but id have to rearrange my shop go make room for a 4×4.

James, this is a great question, but I wanted to let you know that you posted it on the timeline. The timeline is constantly being added to making it likely that it will be hard to find again. A better spot for this question would be on our forum under the CNC subheading. Here is the link for that.

I only make acoustics, not electrics, so I can’t comment on the latter.
I do the soundhole, all inlays, backstrip, end wedge, headstock plate, fretboard, and the entire neck on a CNC. Mine (Laguna IQ) is 3′ in Y and 2′ in X and that is plenty. If you are going to do necks and don’t want to go the double sided route, you will need plenty of Z height.

3D printing and CNC are two areas that I am interested in as a way to facilitate acoustic building.
Two questions:
1) For those of you that have both capabilities in your shops, which do you find more useful or more often used on a regular basis?
2) How did you choose a cnc machine? Given the high cost and huge number of products in the…

What kind of pore filler do you use?
I usually use aqua coat, shellac/pumice or stewmac water based mahogany grain filler. Interested in other methods, including zpoxy.

Im going to be starting my 6th acoustic build soon. One issue I continue to have is low spots on the sides. I use an LMI bender with the spring steel slats that LMI provided (they are pretty stout).
One observation, sometimes there is a bit of rebound in the sides as I take them out of the bender. I sort of force them into the mold to glue…

I’m curious to hear when other acoustic builders attach their bridges, before or after finishing the top?
