So I’ve finally gotten around to hammering a couple frets in after sawing the slot. There is the tiniest gap between the fret and fingerboard is this normal or did I not saw enough. I think you would like the fret to be completely flush right? You can barely fit a piece of paper under there. How much leeway is there to this? Also I will be using CA glue.

Wow amazing detail I really appreciate it a lot. Next step for me is stockpiling scrap wood I guess! Ill go find a junker guitar with similar grain pattern and color. It should be easy though there are tons of second hand guitars where I am.

I got some chips due to pulling the frets. Does anyone have any tips for fixing this?

First re-fret
I’ve just removed my first set of frets and I have a decently sized chip in the board now. What are my options here? It’s not small enough to be hidden under the fret. How do you guys usually handle chips?

This is an excellent question ! You’ve put it in the timeline, which is totally cool, but it might get lost as time goes by. If you could move it to the forum, it might be better. Here is the link to the correct forum.

Matching sawdust in the chip and drop in thin CA glue works great, if you’re sanding the fingerboard you might get enough sawdust to fill what you need. Adding a barrier in the fret slot helps with clean up. Good luck!

Fret crowning.
Im looking to buy a fret file. My main purpose for it will be for new stainless steel frets medium to medium high size. Which file would you guys recommend for a beginner? Ive been looking at the Z file from stewmac is there more options?

I really like the Original Z file from Stewmac. I also have a three-sided 600 grit diamond crowning file from Philadelphia Luthier that I usually use after Z-file with.

I’m also looking at the music nomad crowning file, it has a similar center line without diamonds on it.

Fingerboard clean up
Hello all, im doing my first refret and im stumped on what to do after removing the frets.
I know im supposed to give it a light sand with a radius block. Im assuming the next step is buffing the fingerboard. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to which buffer wheels I would need to do this? Thanks!

It really depends on the condition of the fretboard and what it needs. I don’t think most people buff the fretboard as a practice during a refret. I don’t. I use a file and smooth out any burrs caused from pulling the frets. Also, if you have any chips or damage on the edges of the fret slots, fix that. Then clean the fret slots out and…

Yes I have seen that technique it seems there’s no downsides to it, so I will be trying it. I haven’t yet bought a triangle file to do it yet. Thanks for your input. Is any triangle file fine?
