I don’t have a specific solution here, though I’d probably opt for modifying the preamp to the instrument, not the other way around – maybe removing some plastic from the underside of the preamp? However, I would reach out to the folks at LR Baggs for (1) to ask for their advice and (2) make sure they know what products it DOESN’T work with! Best of luck, Chris

Yikes. In my experience, and from painful matching lessons, a full back and side refin (up to the neck joint and the bindings) has been the only way to address this damage in a way that I was happy with it leaving my shop.

I’m a fan of India ink – simple to use, apply, and after drying and a coat of fretboard finishing oil I’ve never experienced any issues.

In my experience, it’s much less effort to refinish the entire sides than the hours invested in blending this patch. The binding provides a clean edge between finishes to mask any subtle differences.

Said above perfectly – I also believe that when having high “walls” in the slot, the strings don’t ring out cleanly.

Its plausible that no one wants to touch this project, but I’m curious if we should have a “help wanted” section for folks that might want to pick-up jobs. Maybe not a need, but thought I would check. Thanks!

I use a set of three small blocks (similar in size to the tolex flat toleblock) that have a matching radius to the fingerboard on one edge and then attached a small piece of 3M Stikit sandpaper.
Each block is a different size to accommodate the decreasing space between frets. If you don’t feel comfortable making these blocks by hand, grab a 4″ radius block and cut into sections for your scale length.

Run the frets thru a fret bender to better match the fingerboard radius. Also the Fret Slot Depth Gauge can help ensure your cutting deep enough

That’s fantastic, Thank you Dan! – I’m hopeful to tint the “Soft Grey” with a bit of Kalamazoo Brown so it doesn’t look so washed. For what its worth, the “English Color Ultra” is about the best looking stain I’ve ever seen.
