Anyone have any experience removing a neck from an early ‘30’s Gibson L4? I’m having tons of trouble with this thing.

Could be that the top is over the dovetail. You ever run into that before ?

@ianhatesguitars That’s exactly what I’m afraid of. I’ve not run into myself. Only watched it in videos. I’m thinking I may have to cut through the fingerboard and the support under the fingerboard (it looks like the support is a separate piece from the neck) but I wanted (and was hoping) to see if anyone here had any other ideas before I go the more invasive route

@ianhatesguitars any suggestions (or even well wishes 😂) would be greatly appreciated

@patreon_135364993 So you have the riser too, which extra sucks. On a regular one, I take a saw and saw through the fret slot JUST the width of what I think the dovetail is. This leaves the fingerboard extension connected to the neck. I then take a razor blade and hammer into the fret slot and through the top.
After you do this, when you are pushing the neck out, you may have to push the spruce down underneath the fb extension on the very edge. This, combined with the upward force pushing the neck out, should break the spruce to the sides of the dovetail along the grain lines. The neck should push right out.
With a large reverse taper shim, I might switch to an oscillating saw to make that cut further down. I would take a regular saw blade and grind it down to about 1/2″ or so.
