That ebony dust idea makes a lot of sense, but somehow it hadn’t occured to me before. Anyway, thanks for for the great info. Much appreciated!

Good on Taylor for making it straight forward like that. I was imagining something much more arduous. If the guitar comes back to me for the work, I will definitely reach out if I hit any bumps in the road. Much appreciated!

Hey Bryan,
Thanks for your thoughts. Your setup sounds similar to something I was doing a hand full of years ago with my woodworking business – finishing in one shop along with some other, more specific work (in that case it was spindle and bowl turning, pretty dusty/dirty work) in the other.
I guess, my point is that I’ve tried this sort of thing in the past in a different context – always with mixed results. My current circumstances have me trying it again with instrument work. It’s never ideal to split the work up into different locations, but I’m hoping to make the best of it. We’ll see.
Thanks again for sharing a little about your setup. Much appreciated.

MemberFebruary 6, 2024 at 3:40 pm in reply to: Strange(?) bellying on Martin 000-15 SMThanks for your thoughts. I guess I’m glad to know that I wasn’t crazy. I have to say it was a weird sensation to run my hand along the top and feels all the undulations…. Bummed that it sounds like he might be looking at a retop – assuming that’s where it’s headed.
I measured the top at the soundhole with calipers and it’s right around .125″ to slightly under. Right around the ballpark of what you’d expect, I think? But perhaps it was thinned out more closer to the rims? (As I type that, I realize there was a section right near the rim on the bass side where there’s a slight recurve before the big bump starts – as if the lining is the only thing that kept it from bulging right to the edge.)
I’m pretty sure he’s the original owner, so it sounds like we’ll be reaching out to Martin. I’m curious how that process normally works. Would they have him ship it out them or do they normally have an owner find a local repairperson to do the work? Just curious what he can expect.
Thanks again for your comments and thoughts.
