I think it looks really cool! Also, great to have someone in the group that is fluent in Solid Works!

Including, waiting to make a new nut when the fret level is in the budget. There’s no upside to getting involved in subjective situations.

Btw, I have a tut in the archives about doing a boolean cut on a volume knob. I’d like to get your take on it if you have the time.

I’ve never seen anything quite that crazy. Could be any number of things, but I don’t see any way to tackle this that doesn’t involve stripping and refining. Wait for a second opinion though. -
Is that bare wood ? Hard to tell from the picture. Looks like an FnF project to me.

AdministratorJanuary 7, 2024 at 9:57 am in reply to: 76’ D-35 neck resetFB extension shims. I always shim unless otherwise told not to by the client. If it’s going to be an extreme example, I might pass on the project as without context, it would make me look like a rookie by modern sensibilities.

AdministratorJanuary 7, 2024 at 9:35 am in reply to: 76’ D-35 neck resetFor releasing FB extensions I go north of that in heat and north of that in time. 76 is probably white glue if unmolested and really responds well the pressure and heat. Some times I get it hot enough to slip the pallet knife under a 1/4 and then wedge it with a second pallet knife. I’ll mask that assortment off with aluminum foil and let it sit with heat for a while.
After that I might move the wedge knife in a little. Bottom line, it should go in easy on white glue. You shouldn’t hear any crunching or cracking from the spruce.
Sometimes with extreme runout going the wrong way, I might set up the guitar in the neck popper jig, heat the dovetail and the fb at the same time with pressure from the popper on the neck. If I get the FB to go “eeep!” from the opposite direction, I’ll work it that way.
Also, sometimes you are just hosed. Extreme run out can be impossible.

AdministratorJanuary 6, 2024 at 9:59 am in reply to: Finish Damage from Proper’s WorkstationIt’s ok, I would leave it up. A reaction here and there is going to happen. I had one with two headstocks, I just put paper towels down now. Speaking of which, I have had interactions with paper towels before and cork and just about everything I’ve put between lacquer and a resting spot. It’s just bound to happen from time to time.

AdministratorDecember 23, 2023 at 6:12 am in reply to: Blender TutorialsI really glad to have access to both fusion and blender. I still don’t know of anyone who dual wields fusion and rhino, so I’ve never heard a real good comparison. My instinct is that better, although it sounds like Rhino 8 is adding a couple things that I cannot live without in both Blender and Fusion. Namely shrink wrap and push pull. Blender’s push pull really sucks right now btw. Making a hole through an object is super tedious in Blender.

AdministratorDecember 17, 2023 at 8:36 am in reply to: Blender TutorialsBlender, for me, was an absolute slog to learn. I was trying to tackle a larger project than just modeling, so there is that. It’s doable though and totally worth it, but intuitive it is not (imo). Things to note about my opinion on this is that I am old and up until blender I never used a hot key for anything. Blender is impossible without learning and making a muscle memory connection with about 50-100 hotkeys (depending on your goals).
One other upside to blender. If you make a clean model, the options for rendering become everything from crazy stylization to photo realistic. Also making killer promo videos etc.

AdministratorDecember 17, 2023 at 8:31 am in reply to: Blender TutorialsMy workflow is basically hopping in and out of Blender and Fusion. I usually rough thigs out dimensional in fusion, export the obj, and then finish shaping in Blender. There is nothing like the blender hot key environment for fast shaping as it is designed for production asset modeling in games, cg and vfx.
The other thing to think about is that while you model in nurbs in fusion, it spits out a mesh. Often times it does it really really rough. Since blender modeling for CG requires good modeling practices to reduce artifacts, if you model in blender, your mesh is just going to be cleaner and lighter than what Fusion spits out with it’s brute force algorithm (I’m assuming a little here).

It doesn’t penetrate much and if your so fill isn’t to their liking, someone in the future can reverse it without much erosion. Just accelerate before application to further inhibit penetration.
