AdministratorJanuary 11, 2026 at 6:34 am in reply to: Steam Box Idea… What’s wrong with this idea?I tried it once for trying to bend mandolin sides. This was in 2006, back when the internet wasn’t nearly as useful as it is today, so the attempt was pretty incomplete I think.
If I remember correctly I used a pvc tube and the steamer I was using for taking necks off. Probably underkill. Anyway, it didn’t produce a significant advantage for trying to keep the maple breaking on the figure lines around the scroll so I ditched out.
I think now it would totally be worth trying to get a rig going.

AdministratorDecember 19, 2025 at 5:57 am in reply to: Acoustic Guitar Neck RepairWhat kind of cauls do you have at your disposal ? I would thing a radiused sanding block and an F-Clamp would get this back together readily. As far as the glue, you could start with watered down Tite-bond and then switch to straight glue after it starts to wick in. The water will help the straight glue travel down the crack with a little wiggling of the joint.

AdministratorDecember 2, 2025 at 5:43 am in reply to: Finish repair from mystery solventsI agree with this. Just Novus probably wasn’t going to be enough. It kind of looks like someone accidentally used alcohol instead of naptha. It’s a very subtle boo boo.
Use some 2000 grit sanding paper and a flat block and in a small area, test sanding it and then polishing it up with the Novus. Things to watch for are your paper excessively gumming up. If there is a broader chemistry issue with the lacquer, stop. You could wind up sanding down to bare wood before you find lacquer that can be polished.
As your customer indicated that they aren’t interested in spray, think about this really hard though. Sanding and polishing always comes with the risk that the finish isn’t thick enough to support this. Sanding through will result in spraying.
Those old Gibsons are often heavy on the lacquer. You might do just fine.

AdministratorNovember 30, 2025 at 8:28 am in reply to: Widening fretslotsI would imagine the tooth geometry is the same. It’s just more options for thickness.
Yep, it’s not how I would do it. Not to say it can’t be done, but I switched to rotary really early on, so my experience trying to saw slots to dimension isn’t super robust. It was kind of a non starter for me on bound boards, so I just wanted to develop a system that was universal.

These gauged pull saws might be worth looking at. Its still tough business trying to make a slot precisely wider with a hand saw.

AdministratorNovember 28, 2025 at 4:10 pm in reply to: 1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling FretsThe are, but only because of muscle memory. For what ever reason, the new ones feel like the lift more aggressively when you grip the handles and the jaws slip under the fret. I’m not sure why after looking at them both side by side. It’s probably just being old.
In general, I really only want the pullers to lift the fret just a little bit when I move them down the fret.

AdministratorNovember 27, 2025 at 6:20 pm in reply to: 1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling Fretsbe careful not to singe the wood. Quick zaps and spread it far across the fret so the whole fret heats.
which fret puller are you using?

AdministratorNovember 27, 2025 at 2:42 pm in reply to: 1973 Jazz Bass Refret Issues with Pulling FretsHave you tried the Stewkac chip reducers?
I have not. I’ve heard good things though. Are you using heat? Sometimes it helps to switch from the soldering pencil to the gun with the split tip to get a more even heat over the fret. I’ve done alright with heat and really small bites with the fret pullers.
