Was feeling that special kind of lazy when I was tasked with making a new mandolin nut, so I whipped up this jig to hold the nut blank while I made the initial cuts for the nut slots. I designed it to accept the hosco string slot guide saw with a .2mm kerf (https://shorturl.at/62EG9 – link to Philadelphia Luthier Tools). Pop your nut blank in and slot away.
Some Specs:
Nut Dimensions
Nut width – 1.125″ (28.575mm)
Nut Depth – 0.19685″ (5mm)
space string paired strings – 3/32″ (2.38mm)
Space between string pairs – 6/32″ (4.7625mm)
If your 3d printer doesn’t have issues with “elephant foot” on the first layer, I would recommend printing upside down to avoid overhang issues. Otherwise it should print fine with either orientation.
If there’s enough interest I could make a similar jig for 1-1/4″ nuts. Will probably do so anyway once the need arises.
