What kind of glue do you think they used?
This top crack had been glued (not by me), and is now open, puckered, and the glue residue is very dark (almost black). Internally, there are 2 very neat cleats. What glue do you think they used? A possible clue: there is a smear of something on the finish by the sound hole that looks like it could be epoxy.

Any clues on what the cleats were glued in with?

@ianhatesguitars No, the cleats are very clean. Probably a different glue.

@patreon_105088020 I saw Michael’s mention titebond III. That is interesting. Hide glue could also look grubby if it was applied with unwashed fingers.
Another over looked thing is just getting dirt infused polish smeared into it by the owner.

@ianhatesguitars I dug out as much of the offending glue out as I could, and it was definitely the adhesive that had turned dark. It wasn’t hide glue, as it wasn’t crunchy. The objective was to make it look and feel better, and close up and stabilize the gaping crack. I cleaned it up with sharp blades, inlaid some slivers of spruce, glued it flat with fish glue, and used Gluboost ultra thin on top. I also added more cleats. The attached picture shows the before and after. Better, though perhaps not best. The client didn’t budget for best.

I did a quick search and AI told me that Titebond III is noted for its propensity to turn dark over time (“nearly black, especially noticeable on lighter woods”). Did not know that, though it may be AI hallucination.

@patreon_120195814 That could be it. Or we could all be AI hallucinations.
