Different Truss Rod = New Trouble?
Friends,
I have built a few electric bass guitars using the small-ish (i.e., long and thin) LMI truss rods. However, now that I can no longer get these rods I am experimenting with a few others and need some advice.
The rod I have in the photos requires a 4mm key for adjustment but also needs at least a 1/4-inch diameter access hole to allow the wrench to seat squarely into the rod’s nut. I drilled the hole by using a 1/4-inch aircraft bit, but even with this long bit the hole (which is actually a tunnel) is angled slightly downward. This is just enough of an angle to prohibit a standard 4mm wrench to seat in the nut.
Since this is my first time using this size truss rod, are there any other ways to drill a straight pathway from the headstock to the nut, so the wrench will work correctly?
Thanks for any advice!
Dom

Have you tried using a Dremel with a burr bit to help remove obstructing wood to make a straighter path to the rod nut? I know, not a solution, just a band-aid fix.
