Does anyone one know if a 1964 Chet Atkins has knubs on the frets, or the frets filed back to the fret board and then bound. Or do the originals have the frets over the binding. Couldn’t find a clear picture anywhere.

George, this is an excellent question, but you asked it in the timeline, which is totally cool, but as more stuff gets posted, it might get lost before it gets answered. If you could ask it in the electric guitar repair forum, it will get more traction. That Forum can be found at this link.

Thanks Ian! I’m new here and still trying to find my way around.

It looks like they had nibs. Most look like they’ve had fret jobs and nibs removed but these pics clearly show nibs…….

Thank you Tony! I thought so. Who ever did the previous fret job really hacked up the binding. I have to do a neck reset, which was also a poor job, and the owner wants to restore it to original. Thanks again!

Hi George. I was thinking of you when I made some ABS paste from soaking ABS binding in acetone. I use it for binding repairs. It sticks well to old celluloid as the acetone will etch into it. At any rate, I don’t know if you are replacing the binding or if you are attempting to fix existing binding. If you want, I think you can use the paste successfully to add nibs to existing binding. I put a dab on ABS binding and it works great. You could dab on a blob to the fret end and binding and shape.
