• A question for all you repair folks working out of your home: The insurance industry is basically pulling out of California. Our homeowners insurance policy was just cancelled because I have a business in my home, probably because I have foot traffic. Repair only, no retail. My shop is in a detached garage. Property is zoned for my business. I have separate insurance for the business. We’re shopping for insurance but I’m not hopeful. It’s a bummer because everything going great on the business front. The rest of the country can get insurance but tough here. Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated.

      • Man, I would rent a space before I went without home owners insurance. How did they find out ?

          • And I love what I’m doing……we’ll live on the street…..

            • California here..Sorry to hear that. The insurance industry is completely fucked right now and have no sympathy or idea what to do, neither does the state. I’m curious why they pulled your homeowners insurance for having a detached shop space? I have the same setup at my home (shhhh don’t tell them because I’m not). I run at appointment only, the way I see it is that having a shop is just that. If someone wants to come by, they schedule an appointment and come by. I think you will just have to sign up for the FAIR plan, which is state mandated. Good luck, I hope this all works out for you.

              • ya…..I’m sure just about everyone is in (“shhhh don’t tell mode”) and the “you idiot” mode and that’s why not many responses. But I live in a small town and the agents I deal with are local. Word of mouth has been the best advertisement along with the sandwich boards so everyone knows and it’s hard to “shhhh”. Thank you for being candid and commiseration! My business plan ( thanks Doug et.al for the wonderful “loothing for dollars” which I watched as I was forming the plan) is working perfectly so I’m gonna stick too it as closely as possible. prolly gonna have them drop off on the street as I think interaction in the small town is key and why it’s been successful. I think very different from being in the big city where “appointment only” makes sense. Also, many interesting characters have “wondered” (misspelled on purpose) in like the 80+ year old Phillip Smith, a former guitar repairman who worked for Semie Mosley at Mosrite in Bakersfield and fixed guitars for everyone from Buck Owens to Merle Haggard and who’s brother drummed on tens of albums. He lives just up the way. I’m hopeful it’ll work out ’cause it’s just been so perfect. I’ve only been in business for 8 months and I’m swamped. And I love the work. It’s perfect for me and it’s music related, which makes people leave all the bullshit at the door. Once again, thanks for your honesty and response!
