A couple of years ago, I came up with a neck rest for the Total Vise system- they worked great but were quite difficult to make, having to machine the aluminum and whatnot. I made a couple for us in the shop and a few extras for friends but it didn’t seem like something worthwhile to gear up and produce more of them.

I decided to revisit the neck rest for my Total Vise system as a 3D modeling project to see if I could replicate the design as mostly 3D printed.

This was the result. There are still a few bits of it that involve hardware but I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.

The insert of the neck rest can be removed and used with either side facing up depending on whether you would like to support the neck side or fingerboard side on the rest.

For a few months, I’ve been taking lessons with my dear friend, David Trustman @datguitars in 3D modeling. He is a fantastic teacher and I’ve learned a lot.

Between that, 3D Club run by the inimitable James Roadman @jroadman and along with the encouragement of a few friends like Buck Van Laarhoven @vlguitarrepair, Luke Heaton @whittlesticks.strings, Max Monterosso @maxmonte_guitars and Andy Morrish @andycharlesguitars – all of whom are a lot smarter than I am – I think I’m beginning to see the world in 3D.

Here are the 3MF and the STL File for the TV Quick-Dock neck rest I posted about on IG a few days ago

It does require some hardware, which after a fair amount of playing around with it in an attempt to come up with a version that avoided any “hardware”, it became clear that from a strength standpoint – the hardware was actually a good idea to stick with

The hardware I used is as follows:

(1) – Nylon Adjustable Handle 3/8″-16 Black-Oxide Steel Insert, 9/16″ Thread Depth

(1) Steel Hex Head Screw – Zinc-Plated, 3/8″-16 Thread Size, 3-1/2″ Long, Partially Threaded with (1) corresponding washer

(1) Steel Hex Head Screw – Zinc-Plated, 3/8″-16 Thread Size, 6″ Long, Partially Threaded with (2) corresponding nuts and washers

I also like to use a Titan cargo strap to secure the guitar over the fingerboard.  There are two holes in the carriage of the neck rest to screw a strap to if you choose to use one.
