Restoring vintage purfling

What is the best way to approach the restoration of vintage purfling? I am working on an attractive but not terribly valuable parlor guitar with beautiful purfling that is broken out in several places. I see that Gurian will attempt to recreate this, but at a $200 minimum. Can’t find a more affordable replacement on line, and am not sure I know how to create it myself. Thanks.
